Laptop Charging Intermittently

Laptop Charging Intermittently

An intermittently charging laptop is one of the most frustrating faults a user can experience. One moment the charging icon appears and the percentage climbs; the next, the laptop reports running on battery despite being plugged in. The status flickers between charging and discharging, and the battery never quite reaches full. At Electronics Repair Nairobi, we treat intermittent charging as a genuine warning sign, because the underlying fault is almost always progressive and will eventually fail completely.

Intermittent charging almost always indicates a physical or thermal discontinuity somewhere in the power path. The most common location is the charging port itself. DC jacks and USB-C ports endure constant plugging and unplugging, and their solder joints, tension contacts, and pins gradually wear or fracture. A cracked solder joint makes contact when the laptop is in one position and breaks contact when the machine is moved, which is why many customers notice the fault appears or disappears depending on how the cable is angled. USB-C ports have the additional problem of pin wear and debris accumulation inside the connector recess.

The charger and cable are the second most likely cause. A cable with a partially broken conductor inside its insulation will carry current intermittently, especially when flexed at the point of damage. A charger with failing internal components may cut out as it heats up, then resume charging after cooling. Careful load testing, including flexing the cable and monitoring the output, usually reveals this behaviour clearly.

At the motherboard level, intermittent charging can be caused by thermal faults in the charging circuit: a cracked component joint, a stressed MOSFET, or a charging IC that behaves erratically as the board warms during use. Liquid damage is a frequent contributor, because residue from spills is mildly conductive and corrosive, creating unpredictable connections long after the liquid has dried. In addition, some cases are software-related: a battery driver or embedded controller in a fault state can cause the charging indicator to flicker even when power delivery is stable. We rule these out by observing the actual current entering the battery, not merely the on-screen icon.

Our diagnostic procedure is thorough. We test the charger under load and flex the cable at intervals while monitoring output. We inspect the port under magnification, checking pin condition and solder integrity. We measure voltages along the input rail while the laptop is moved, warmed, and cooled, to catch thermally sensitive faults. Once the fault is confirmed, we repair it properly: replacing or re-soldering the port, replacing the damaged cable or charger, or performing board-level rework on the affected component. Every repair is completed with precision tools and covered by a service warranty, and most common faults are finished within one working day.

If your laptop charges only when the cable is held a certain way, or the charging indicator flickers unpredictably, please act before the fault becomes total failure. Bring your laptop to Electronics Repair Nairobi or call us to arrange pickup, and our technicians will restore a stable, reliable charging connection.
